Wiki in the classroom

Wikis can be an invaluable tools to support your online teaching activities. Intodit provides a free and flexible Wiki service where you can drag and drop content, including text, graphics, and video with a focus on ease of use. This page tries to help you with setting up a Wiki for your class successfully.

1) Create a Wiki:

2) Decide on purpose: This may seem obvious, but first decide if you are going to use the Wiki as an information providing tool (push) or to let them collarorate on a project (pull). If you use a Wiki to collaborate on a project which will be graded, then first think about a appropriate naming scheme for their login names so you can see who contributed and what they did.

3) Explain & monitor: Provide feedback in class about the progress the students are making with the Wiki. Don't expect that everyone immediately gets the concept or knows what to do. It's always a good idea to show how to get started by adding some basic pages yourself first. A good idea would be to add a 'Guidelines' page which outlines the most important things for the students to think about when participating and how it will eventually affect their grading or learning. Monitor the Wiki daily and provide comments on which pages and students are doing best to provide a guideline.

4) Learn from examples: Visit the Examples of class Wikis page to see how other teachers are using a Wiki to support their online teaching activities.
